Sharing our Stories: Lindsey Goodman

Flutist Lindsey Goodman performs works by Kaija Saariaho and the world premiere by Jorge Sosa on the national anthems this weekend! She also will perform New Zealand composer Helen Fisher's TE TANGI A TE MATUI for singing flutist as the musical prelude to tours of the Nationality Rooms in the Cathedral of Learning before each performance.

Lindsey shared with us her own family history and heritage:

“My great-great grandmother Mary Ann Jenkins Reeves was born 1850 in Bryn Mawr, Monmouth, Wales. She emigrated to the US in 1864, and was known to sing and love music, regularly participating in Eisteddfod Welsh music and poetry festivals.

My great-great grandfather Jabez Reeves was born 1840 in Motcombe, Dorset, England. From meager beginnings as a puddler in the Victoria Iron works, he emigrated to the US in 1865 and, with two of his brothers, began several successful enterprises in Dover, Ohio. These included rolling mills, iron forges, manufacturing, lumber, land development, and, most notably, Reeves Iron and Steel Company, whose smokestack is still visible in the town.”

“Here are my parents and I on the Tuscora Park carousel in Dover, Ohio. The park and carousel were added right around the time that my maternal grandmother was born there, so we call it my Grandma's carousel. She was Marthamae Reeves Dorrance, and I visit the town regularly to play third flute/piccolo with the Tuscarawas Philharmonic, a post I've held since May 2006. Originally, we performed in my grandmother's school, Dover High School, but we now perform indoor concerts in the Kent State University Tuscarawas Performing Arts Center, with the aptly-donated Reeves Lobby, and outdoor concerts in Tuscora Park.”

“This is my great grandmother Olive Mary Loeffler Dorrance, who was born in Germany. She was a pianist who worked in music stores in downtown Pittsburgh around 1912 teaching lessons, demonstrating pianos, and playing the latest sheet music for customers to purchase.

In the music store she met and later married Roy Gilbert Dorrance, who began several enterprises. By 1930, he became one the principals in The Brown & Dorrance Electric Co. in Pittsburgh, the largest distributor of household electrical appliances in Western Pennsylvania. Dorrance Supply continues successfully under my uncle's leadership to distribute electronics out of Youngstown, Ohio; my dad retired from working in the company just a couple of years ago.”
